Do Cat Water Fountains Work? (What Is The Quietest?)

If you are interested in a cat water fountain or researching them, you may be wondering if they really work and worth the purchase…

Do cat water fountains work?

Cat water fountains do work and cats tend to like them. The reason for this is the fact that the water is tunning than being still. The theory is, this goes back to their wild living ancestors who perceived running water as fresh and safer.

So, now you know. But, what are the benefits of these fountains? do cats drink more from them? What is my best quiet cat water fountain? Keep reading for these answers, and so much more…

What is a cat water fountain?

A cat water fountain is a device that provides constant running water and resembles a waterfall or stream of water in nature. These water fountains often come with filters to keep the water fresh and more appealing to cats.

These water fountains are often preferred to water in a bowl because it is constantly pumping out fresh water and appeals to a cats preferred method of water consumption.

What are the benefits of a cat water fountain?

In this section, I will explain some of the benefits of cat water fountains in general. This will help you understand why cat owners tend to buy them.

01. Reduces chances of bacteria growth

Because the water fountain keeps streaming freshwater it has less chance of building up bacteria in there. With a conventional water bowl, if it is not changed and refreshed regularly, it can get stale and attract bacteria.

This is one of the reasons why wild cats, historically speaking, would prefer fresh running stream water. To make sure it is fresh and clean.

02. Reduces Odors

The filters that many water fountains come with have a good way of removing any odor that the water could have created. This is not possible in a standard water bowl unless you frequently change it.

03. Improved taste

Another benefit of these filters in the water fountains is the improved taste they offer. This could be one of the reasons some cats start to drink more when a fountain is used in their home.

Do cats drink more from Fountain?

Cats do tend to drink more when a fountain is used. This is for a few reasons. Such as the fact that it’s streaming constantly, has better taste, and removes any odor from the water.

Some cat owners swear by a fountain to help their cats drink more. Failing that wet food is always a good addition as well.

How often should you change the water in Cat Fountain?

The cat water fountain should be cleaned out weekly, ideally. Also, to keep the benefit the filters offer, they need to be changed at regular intervals too.

What you should know about Veken & Catit water fountains

Before you pick one of these water fountains it’s important to understand some of the features and benefits that they offer. So you can make an educated choice. So, for that reason, I will list some below for you…

  • Quiet
  • Low water level indicator
  • Auto-pump switch off
  • Large water capacity
  • Filtered water

Quiet

I am assuming that you appreciate quiet water fountains, right? Well, if you are like me, then the answer is yes. The worst thing is having a noisy water pump keeping you up at night.

Low water level indicator

Running out of water is not only frustrating for you but even more for your cat.  In fact, it can lead to your cat losing faith in the device and not relying on it. Before you know it you’ve been reverted to a cat bowl (Click here for my best cat bowls).

So, the device must have a clear indication system so you know when the water level is getting low.

Auto-pump switch off

Following on from above, it’s important to get a clear indication of when the water runs out. But, it’s even more important is the device switches off the pump when it runs out. Why? Because it saves wasted energy and any potential damage to the unit.

Large water capacity

Ideally, the water fountain has a big water capacity. This is even more important if you have multiple cats. But, still, a bonus if you have one.

Filtered water

This is one of the biggest benefits of having a water fountain, in my opinion. Not only do you have free-flowing water to get your cat to drink more, but it cleans the water as well. Are you with me?

3 of My Best Quiet Cat Water Fountains (Veken vs Catit)

Which is my best quiet cat water fountain (Veken or Catit)? This is my best one (Click here for the availability on Amazon #Ad). I like it because it is quiet, has a cool indicator to monitor the water level, large water capacity for your thirsty cat, and dispenses clean filtered water (more details below).

But, keep reading to see if you agree and my full reasons In this choice.

In this section, I will compare 3 cat water fountains. This will be based on my Veken and Catit devices, but also the addition of a third alternative in case this matches your needs even more.

For each device, I will list my pros and cons as well as explain in detail why I feel that way about it, are you with me?

01. Veken 2.5L Cat Water Fountain (Best Option)

Click here for the price on Amazon #Ad

Pros:

  • Really quiet
  • Indicator to monitor the water level
  • Silicone pad provided (to catch splashes)
  • Large water capacity
  • The water is filtered (Tripple filtered)

Cons:

  • USB connector gets in the way when cleaning
  • The supplied mat is a bit sticky

What I like about this Veken cat water fountain

Firstly this fountain is as quiet as a mouse, that’s what I love about it. The manufacturer states that it is less than 40db (decibels). Does that mean anything to you? If you are like me, not really!

Not sure if you have tried other loud versions before. If you have you can relate to how annoying they can be, right? Well, this is not one of them.

I also love the fact that it is easy to clean and comes with a convenient silicone mat to help catch some of the spillages that the fountain will inevitably create.

If you are concerned about monitoring the water level, then do not worry, it makes it simple to keep an eye on with the LED light display. It also has 3 different flow levels to encourage your kitty to consume as much water as possible.

It also circulates the water cleverly as well, helping to keep the water hygienic and crystal clear for your cat to consume. As well as circulating it also filters the water, with its triple filtration system.

What I do not like about this Veken water fountain

There is a USB cable that is permanently attached to this device. The problem is it’s quite hard to clean it, without wetting this cable. It’s not a big issue, but I just worry if I damage it, it can’t be replaced, are you with me?

Finally, the mat that comes with it. It does the job, but if I am brutally honest it is a bit sticky. You know, has that kind of tacky feely when you touch it. Again, it’s not a deal-breaker, but it is a bit of a dust magnet.

02. Catit 3L Cat Water Fountain

Click here for the price on Amazon #Ad

Pros:

  • Controllable water flow settings
  • Large water capacity (3L)
  • Energy smart pump
  • Filtered water (avoids infections from contaminated water)
  • Ideal height for kittens as well as adults

Cons:

  • Need to replace the filters regularly

What I appreciate about this Catit fountain

Firstly, from a purely cosmetic perspective, I love the design and the cute-looking flower on top. Who doesn’t, right?

Moving on, looking at it more practically, it has 3 water flow settings. These settings are great because you can select the best one that gets your kitty to drink more. Also, it improves the oxygen flow in the water and the taste of the water.

The clever thing about these water flow settings is the use of the cute flower that I mentioned earlier. You effectively configure the flower, which changes the flow of the water. So, it’s not just good to look at, it serves a helpful purpose as well, are you with me?

It is a lovely large water fountain (3L). Meaning it should keep most cats happy for a while. It comes with an energy-efficient pump and helps to soften the water by filtering it.

Although it’s 3L, it has been designed to be compact and ergonomically appealing. So, no worries about it taking up all of your living space.

I also love the fact that this device is easy to break down and clean. If you are like me you will appreciate keeping it clean and maintained to make it last as much as possible.

Finally, I have to comment on the packaging. It has this cool design that can be cut up and flipped into a handy cat toy. It’s a nice touch. And, not many people think of these things, which makes it makes it more impressive.

What I do not love about this Catit fountain

Whilst I love the fresh filtered water that this device is designed to produce, it does come with a cost, the filters. They need to be replaced. Meaning you need to understand that you will have to pay for new filters to maintain the filtered system (Click here to see the cost of the filters on Amazon #Ad).

It’s not a deal-breaker, in my opinion, but it’s worth knowing this up-front before you make a purchase.

03. Vekonn Cat Water Fountain (Alternative Option)

Click here for the price on Amazon #Ad

Pros:

  • Easy to clean (stainless steel finish)
  • LED light water level indicator
  • Filtration (to purify the water)
  • Simple to set up
  • 360-degree design (Aerate water & easier access)

Cons:

  • If it’s off, no basin to catch the water

What I enjoy about this Vekonn cat fountain

This fountain makes it really easy to see how much water is left in this device. This is achieved with the water-level indicator and LED light that flashes up if the water is too low.

Another cool thing about this device is the fact that it will automatically shut off the pump if the water level is low. This is a clever feature.

It has a cool filtration system to keep the water fresh. You may think, why do I even need this, right? Well, yes it does pump in water but think about what can happen to that water? It can attract hair, fur, dirt, and even bits of food, etc.

This is where the filtration and circulation system really come in and add value. Also, if you are worried about setting this up because you are not good at DIY or tech, don’t worry, it’s simple.

Not only is it easy to set up, but it’s also easy to break down and clean as well. Its 360-degree design makes it easy for your kitty to drink the water and keeps the water fresh.

What annoys me about this Vekonn cat fountain

The only thing that annoys me with this is the lack of a water basin. It means that you need to keep the device running continuously to keep your kitty watered. Other devices have a basin that can store water when the device is off. Not a massive problem, in my opinion, but, worth mentioning.
