If your cat farts when you pick it up there could be several reasons. Such as, it could be the way you are picking it up that could be forcing it to release a fart, it may have a diet that does not agree with it, or you may have caught it off guard and it release the fart from being startled.

Do cats fart smell?

Cat farts do smell. In fact, some people say they smell worse than a human fart. However, it is quite subjective, And, to make matters worse it depends on the cat’s diet how bad it may smell. Meaning, your cat’s fart may smell a lot more than next door’s cat simply because they eat different foods.

Do cats fart on purpose?

Cats do not fart on purpose. It is a natural urge that they simply can’t control. Unlike us humans, they do not have the same concern about the social taboo of it smelling bad. Therefore if they feel they need to, they just will.

Humans on the other hand may attempt to hold in the fart by clenching their buttax until they are in a “safe location”. Which is usually an area where they feel that they will not be found out or anyone will smell it right away. Cats, do not have this need.

Some cats do like to be picked up while others detest it. The ones that do have often been exposed to humans for their lifetime and feel comfortable with it. A feral cat, on the other hand, would not respond in the same way.

This is because feral cats do not trust humans so much, based on their experience with them. And, domesticated cats, on the other hand, may have had years of great experience making them feel comfortable with them.

Also, its worth mentioning that as cats get older their attitude towards beg picked up may change. They may be keen as young cats then find being picked up becomes uncomfortable (more on this later).

If your cat freaks out when it is picked up it could be for several reasons. The most common reasons are it has a health issue causing it pain or discomfort, or it is new to you and still needs time to adjust.

If it’s the former, then you should take your cat to the vets for a checkup as soon as possible. However, if it’s the latter then you may just need to give the cat some time to adjust before rushing in for a hug.

This is because new cats may not have built that trust level with you. So, they may need some time to get used to you, which is understandable.

Why do some cats not like to be picked up?

This is even more of a burden for older cats that may have joint pain or find it uncomfoable in certain positions. However, some cats may be ok with it so it needs to be treated on a cat by cat basis.

Humans feel that being picked up and cuddled is a great display of affection but this is not the case for some cats. They may see this as an unnecceasty or uncomfiable way to display their love. So, you need to see how your cat responds and adjust as need be.

There are some occasions, when attempting to pick your cat up, you may do it incorrectly. If it is done wrong it could cause your cats stomach to be put under pressure resulting in the accidental release of a fart.

Either way it is important to be careful when handling your cat because farting could the least of your worries. It could also be mishandled which could cause it some pain or discomfort.

Should you change how you handle your cat to avoid it farting?

If your cat is farting when you pick kit up you should look at how you are handling just in case this could be the problem. But, sometimes it may not be this it could just be what it is eating or even if it was feeling nervous at that time.

Should you change your cat’s diet if it keeps farting?

If your cat keeps farting on and on it could be linked to its diet. If you have recently noticed this and it corelates with a change in diet you may need to revert back to the old diet, unless their was a reason for thsi change.

If there has been no recent diet change you may need to try another diet to see how your cat reposnds and if the farting situation improves. If not consider asking your vet to check it over in case of any health issues that youmay not be seeing.

Unfortunately, when it comes to diet changes, it can be a long case of trial and error to find the right balance for your cat. Each cat is different and may respond differently to certain foods.

How can you prevent your cat from farting all the time?

To prevent your cat from farting all the time you need to keep it on a constant and stable diet. Once you find a diet that works for it stick with that cats do not need daily variety and changes like us humans, they are unlikely to get bored.

However, there are other things that can be done as well such checking for parasites, keeping up with your routine vet visits. And, avoid things like cows milk, this can easily upset your cats stomach, even though many assume they can drink it.

In case you wondered, regarding the fact that you should the milk, this aversion to cows milk is believed to be caused by the fact that many cats are lactose intolerent causing these upset stomach response.
