3 Ways to stop her chewing your shower curtain

Why do cats chew shower curtain liners?

Some shower curtains, and a shower unit in a bathroom.

Now that you know why your cat is chewing your curtains it is important to understand how to stop this from happening. Therefore, in this section, I will explain a few options on this.

  • Replace them with fabric (Best option)
  • Deter her from using it (sprays, etc)
  • Block access to the bathroom

01. Replace them with fabric (Best option)

The reality is, your cat will just keep on and on with your plastic shower curtains. So, if you are worried, and let’s face it, you must be if you are still reading this, then replacing them is the best option.

There are some great options available that will make your bathroom look beautiful and get rid of this problem once and for all.

02. Deter her from using it (sprays, etc)

Another option is to use a cat deterrent, such as a spray, to try and stop your cat from chewing (Click here if she is attacking your headphones) the plastic. This is as simple as spraying it on and seeing what happens.

The issue with this spray deterrent method

My issue with this method is the fact that it’s a shower curtain that will continually be getting wet. Meaning, it will simply wash off this spray each day.

Meaning, you will be in a constant cycle of spraying this stuff and stinking ou your bathroom, are you with me?

03. Block access to the bathroom

Another sure way of stopping this is blocking access to your bathroom. If your cat cannot get to your shower curtain, she can not chew it, right?

My issue with this blocking access method

As great as this sounds in theory, in practice is another thing. I mean, can you believe that your cat will never find a way to sneak into your bathroom? Well, not me either.

My best fabric shower curtains to stop her chewing

In this section, I will share with you three of my best shower curtains so you can replace your existing plastic one, as discussed in option one above. For each option, I will explain what I like and do not like to help you decide what works best for you.

01. mDesign Fabric curtain (Best Option)

Pros:

  • Quality product (Polyester & cotton)
  • Simple to set up (fits most standard hooks)
  • Uses rust-resistant grommets
  • Appealing waffle weave design
  • Good size for most bathrooms

Cons:

  • A liner is recommended, it’s not waterproof.
  • May need to iron them to remove wrinkles

What I like about this mDesign Fabric curtain

This shower curtain looks gorgeous, in my opinion, I love its neutral modern look. It gives you that feeling of a high-end hotel suite, are you with me? I also appreciate the cute waffle-weave design that is elegantly etched into the fabric.

Setting this up is simple, it uses standard shower hooks, that you are likely to have already. You should be able to re-use what you already have.

It also uses rust-resistant grommets. This stops it from looking aged and disgusting, like some shower curtains after just a few months. Regarding the size, it is a good size for most bathrooms.

In summary, if you are looking for a well-designed, neutral-looking curtain that is easy to put up, then this sounds like a good match for you.

What I dislike about this mDesign Fabric curtain

As much as I love this curtain, it does have some room for improvement. Firstly, it’s not waterproof. And, as crazy as that sounds, believe me, it still works. But, you will need a liner, which is separate.

Also, if you notice wrinkles on it, you may have to iron it, which is a hassle for some people.

Pros:

  • Comes with a 30-day warranty
  • Simple to clean (machine washable, cold & hang to dry)
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Clever design (Weighted on the bottom)
  • Waterproof

Cons:

  • The writing, on the print, is upside down in places
  • The material is quite thin

What I love about this Yostev Fabric Shower curtain

Just the look of this shower curtain is enough to make me like this. I appreciate the fact that it comes with a 30-day warranty. It is also simple to clean. This is helped by the fact that it is machine washable. However, you will need to use a cold wash cycle and hang it to dry.

It is designed to be environmentally friendly, and has a weighted bottom to stop it from flapping all over the place when you are in the shower (click here if your cat is freaking out in there), are you with me?

Also, it is waterproof, so you will not need to invest in a separate liner for this to work.

In summary, if you are looking for a shower curtain that is waterproof and machine washable, then this sounds like the one for you.

What I do not love about this Yostev Fabric Shower curtain

Although this may sound a bit petty, I find the fact that the writing on the print is upside down in some places. Also, the material is quite thin. Not a deal-breaker, but worth mentioning.

Pros:

  • Waterproof (no liner is required)
  • Dries quickly
  • Simple to clean (Machine washable)
  • Quality, durable material
  • Comes with hooks

Cons:

  • It’s quite light but heavy enough
  • The hooks provided are quite cheap looking

What I appreciate about this Yougai Fabric shower curtain

I am not sure about you, but the design on this is just so eye-catching. I love the fact that this shower curtain is waterproof so that no additional liner is required, are you with me? It has some quality and durable material as well.

It is simple to clean, and this is supported by the fact that it is machine washable. I also appreciate the fact that it comes with curtain hooks in case you do not have any (more on this later).

In summary, if you are looking for a shower curtain that is not plastic, looks amazing, and comes with its own hooks, then you will appreciate this one.

What I do not appreciate about this Yougai Fabric shower curtain

Firstly, this shower curtain is quite light. Do not get me wrong, it is heavy enough to do the job, but thought it was worth mentioning.  Also, I mentioned earlier that it comes with its own hooks, remember? Well, my only criticism of this is they seem quite cheap, in my opinion, so you may wish to use your existing ones.

Related Questions:

In this section, I will answer some questions related to your cat’s behavior. If you have more questions feel free to contact me.

Do cats prefer your bed instead of their own?

Some cats prefer your bed rather than their own. This is mainly because they have never been trained to not jump on your bed (Click here to see how). Once boundaries are in place, this often changes.

Why do cats chew shower curtain liners?

Cats are known to chew on curtain liners for the same reasons they chew on curtains, they may be attracted to the texture of the material. When this happens they may either chew on it or rip it to shreds.

Fortunately, there are ways to deal with this (more on this later) some are easy, others are more involved, but doable, never the less.

Can you get cat-proof shower curtain liners?

You can cat-proof shower curtain liners, to an extent. If this is something you are interested in here are a couple of suggestions:

01. Fabric liner

Click here to see the price, on Amazon #Ad

As well as getting fabric show curtains, you can also get fabric liners. This is helpful if your cat is attracted to the plastic variation. And, if that’s the case the fabric may repel it from doing this.

The great thing is it’s quite an easy replacement, assuming you already have plastic curtains.

02. Shower doors

Another option is to use a shower door. This can be added to a shower in a bath and a simple replacement of an existing shower curtain and liner.

This will eliminate any chewing or shredding of the shower curtain regardless of their preference for plastic or fabric.

Why does my cat lick the shower curtain?

A cat may like to lick a shower curtain because it finds the texture desirable. Also, there is a chance that it has detected some pheromones there that have also attracted it.

It may be bizarre to see a cat licking a curtain-like crazy but to them, it’s business as normal.

Can bitter apples deter cats from show curtains?

Bitter apples, or other bitter cat sprays (Click here to see the reviews, on Amazon #Ad) are known to deter cats from curtains. This is a valid solution to try and stop your cat from licking or biting your shower curtain.

The only issue I have with this is it will need to be applied and re-applied quite frequently before your cat gets the message.

Can you tie up the shower curtain to stop your cat from biting it?

You can tie up your shower curtain to stop your cat from biting it. In fact, this is quite a simple solution to consider. And, has no cost to try.

My only issue with this method is the fact that it relies on you remembering to keep it tied up all the time when it’s not in use. And, it is still vulnerable when you are actually using it.
