What you should know before you buy

Before you rush out and pick up a cat bed, you should stop to find out which features and benefits to look out for. For this reason, I will highlight some of the things that you should look out for.

  • Size (Large enough for a Maine Coon)
  • Material (something cozy)
  • Multi-functional (not just a bed)
  • Chemical-free (Eco-friendly)
  • Hand made

Size (Large enough for a Maine Coon)

One of the biggest features is the size, right? Maine coons are big cats so the size is important. Look out for a cat bed that can fit them. But not just fit them, there should be enough room to keep them comfortable.

Material (something cozy)

Keeping it cozy is a must. I find that wool is a great material for most cats. But if you are going for wool, make sure its 100% wool, not some mix of other materials, are you with me?

Multi-functional (not just a bed)

Having a cat bed is great, but it’s even better if you can have it doubled up as a mat or an extra perch on it, right? Look out for beds that offer this multi-functional aspect.

Chemical-free (Eco-friendly)

Not sure about you, but I like to avoid all chemicals. Therefore I tend to prefer items that offer eco-friendly options that completely avoid these chemicals.

Hand made

The quality of the build is important, in my opinion. Hand made items are generally better made. They are typically made with love rather than machines. Therefore, you should look out for hand made cat beds where possible.

Best woobie cat bed for Maine Coons:

01. Handcrafted Cat Cave Bed (Best Option)

  • Large, spacious bed (great for Maine Coons)
  • Comfortable & Cozy (100% Wool)
  • Quality (Handcrafted)
  • Free of unwanted chemicals
  • Muti-functional (can be used as a mat)

  • Hard to keep its shape

What I like about this handcrafted cat bed

This cat bed is ideal for Maine Coons, it’s a lovely spacious bed that is flexible. I say flexible because it can be used by a small kitten or even a large Maine Coon. Apart from the size, I appreciate its comfort. It is 100% merino wool.

This felted wool is known for being really soft and offering great warmth in the winter. But, the extra benefit of being good for the summer.

Wool is one thing, but if it’s not designed or manufactured well, then it’s neither here nor there, are you with me? My point is this, I appreciate that it’s handcrafted. It makes me feel that there has been some love injected into the process. Rather than just another factory rollout.

While we are on the topic of manufacturing, let me comment on the fact that the manufacturer states that there are no harsh chemicals used (non-toxic). This is reassuring, the last thing we want is kitty mixing with some dodgy chemicals.

In addition to this, is the fact that the materials used are sustainable. Meaning that they are better for our environment.

Finally, did I mention that this cat bed can be used as a mat as well? Well, this is one of the main features of this cat cave. It’s handy to have the option.

What I do not like about this cat bed

One of the issues with this cat bed is ironically one of its features, it’s multifunction as a mat. Although this is a great feature, the way its implemented may frustrate you. The issue is, it has no real structure, so it is likely to collapse a lot and make your kitty use it more like a mat, rather than a cave, are you with me?

02. Large Cat Bed Cave

  • Large bed (Ideal for Main Coons)
  • Quality (100% Merino wool)
  • Eco-friendly materials
  • Simple to clean
  • Muti-functional (Sleep on top or inside)

  • Some cats may chew on it

What I love about this large cat bed

This cat bed is a great size for Maine Coons. Like the previous cat bed, this too can easily be used by kittens or larger cats. It also has been made with 100% merino wool. This is one of the things I love about this, it uses eco-friendly material, indicating that it’s better for our environment.

The great thing about this cat bed is the fact that its cozy, warm but still strong and durable. They have the option of sleeping on top or in the conventional location, inside.

Finally, it’s still easy to maintain and clean. This is helped by the fact that merino wool has a natural tendency of repelling stains, odor, and dirt.

What I am not ecstatic about, with this large cat bed

Whilst I love this material, I have to say if you have a cat that is a little bit naughty. You may find that she will ant to chew on it. And, it’s not ideal for her to eat. In all honesty, this could be seen as a bit nitpicky, and in reality, this may never even happen to your cat, but just worth mentioning.

03. Large Cat Cube Bed

  • Large bed (Perfect for Maine Coons)
  • Comfortable faux fur finish
  • Easy to setup
  • Additional perch on top for your kitty
  • Simple to store (fold flat)
  • Machine Washable

  • Top perch could be stronger

What I am excited about this cat bed

This cat bed has an interesting cube-like shape. It is by far the most stand-out feature of this device. It is also still a great size for your large Maine Coon and I am confident she will appreciate the comfortable faux fur finish. It will make her feel cozy and warm.

One of the benefits of this cube design is the fact that it creates two levels. One inside the cube and one on top. Your cat now has two options for places to nap.

If you are a novice when it comes to setting things up, like me, don’t worry. This will not be an issue for you. It is a doddle (easy) to set up. In addition to this, it is easy to fold it up and store away in your house when you are not using it.

I was also happy to learn that pillow and base (fleece) is machine washable making life a lot easier.

What I do not like about this cat bed

My only concern with this bed is the top perch. I just feel that it could be a bit stronger. It may not be a real issue, but I think it could be improved by this.

Related Questions

In this section, I am going to answer some questions related to cats, cat beds and Maine Coons. If you have any other related questions feel free to drop a comment below.

How many hours a day do Maine Coons sleep?

Maine coons are known to sleep as much as 20 hours per day. This is quite a lot when compared to us humans. I guess if you do not have to do a full day of work to do, these cats have the time.

Do Maine coons like to sleep on their backs?

Yes, Maine Coons do sleep on their backs, sometimes. However, this is not their most frequent sleeping position. They often roll on to their backs in front of their owners. This is a way of playing and showing that they trust you.

When a cat exposes their stomach while being flat on their back it exposes their most vulnerable position. Meaning that they will only display this if they feel comfortable and trust you. Therefore, it should be seen as a compliment, are you with me?

Do Maine coons like to cuddle?

Yes, Maine Coons do like to cuddle. They are big, but an affectionate breed. They are great family cats and good to have around the house.

Should I bathe my Maine Coon?

Yes, you should bathe your Maine Coon, according to this site, The reasoning is that it will help with their shedding. They also suggest that it is advisable to introduce them to bathing from an early age. Also, be mindful, cat dander (Click here to see my best 3 air purifiers to combat this) is very likely with these cats.

Do Maine Coon cats get Matted fur?

Yes, Maine Coons do get matted fur (Click here to learn how to get rid of it). Because they have such long fur it can be hard to manage. Therefore it is important to keep them groomed as much as possible (Click here to see my best de-matting combs) to avoid this problem.
