What you should know about self-cleaning litter boxes (Guide)

Before you dive in and start choosing your best litter box, it’s worthwhile if I explain more about the best features and benefits to look out for, to help you make a more informed decision. So, here are a few to look out for…

  • Simple to set-up
  • Crystal litter
  • Quiet cleaning cycle
  • Speedy cleaning process
  • Leak-proof

Simple to set-up

Any litter box you select should be quick and simple to set-up. I know, this may sound obvious, but many people get excited by a list of features and neglect this simple benefit.

Crystal litter

Although this is not mandatory, it is helpful. Why? Well, crystal litter will help to absorb the mess and also, some of them come scented to lock in the odor.

Quiet cleaning cycle

Unfortunately, some of these devices on the market are noisy. And, understand that this thing will be self-cleaning quite frequently, so the quieter the better.

Speedy cleaning process

Each time your kitty laves some mess, there will be a delay until it is cleaned up. So, it’s important to have a fast system that won’t delay the next usage. This is even more important when you have multiple cats.

Leak-proof

The worst thing is having a big leak in the litter tray, therefore it is essential to look out for one that is leak-proof to avoid these accidents.

My best self-cleaning litter boxes (Review)

In this section, I will share with you three of my best self-cleaning litter boxes. But, more specifically, ones that are ideal for multiple cats. For each one, I will explain what I loved and also what I found annoying.

This will help you to decide which one works best for you.

01. Hooded Self Cleaning Litter Box (Best Option)

Pros:

  • It helps to keep litter in the box
  • Simple to setup
  • The scent helps to remove the odor
  • No need to touch the mess
  • Dust-free crystal litter
  • Protects against any leaks
  • Monitor her litter use

Cons:

  • Quite noisy
  • Blades tend to get messy

What I like about this self-cleaning litter box

As you may have already guessed, I like this litter box, but why? Well, firstly it’s easy to set up and if you are like me, you will understand that this is a big bonus. Also, it has the bonus of the hood.

The hood stops the litter from getting out and messing up your home. How many times have you had to clean up cat litter using those conventional litter trays? Exactly!

One of the benefits of these litter trays is the fact that there is no need to touch the stinky mess that usual litter trays force us to, are you with me?

As well as the hooded feature that I mentioned earlier, it also has the addition of some sweet scent to help to get rid of the smell that, up until now, you may have been used to.

It also has some handy leak protection to stop urine leaking through onto your floor, which is much appreciated. Along with this, it comes with crystal-based litter. This is really efficient stuff. And, it helps that it comes with a feature to reduce the excess dust.

Lastly, it has the ability to monitor your kitty’s movements. Meaning, how often she visits the litter tray. You may wonder why you would want to do this, right?

Well, it is actually a clever way to keep an eye on her health. You see, if she is not visiting the litter enough there could be a health issue. And, if it’s not that, where else is she going to do it, in your house somewhere, maybe?

So, either way, you need to know as early as possible, right?

What I do not like about this self-cleaning litter box

This self-cleaning litter system is ideal, but it does have its faults. In particular the noise. I mean when it is auto-cleaning. It’s not a deal-breaker, in my opinion, but something you need to know about up-front.

Also, the blades that it comes with, that it uses for cleaning, they get quite messy with each cycle. Basically, the mess gets stuck on it, are you with me?

Therefore, you will need to be prepared to clean them off, and it is a bit of a pain.

02. Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box

Pros:

  • Quiet cleaning cycle
  • Simple to replace & maintain
  • Saves you time (do not need to manually clean)
  • Reduces smelly litter odor
  • Easy to clean
  • Protects against leaking

Cons:

  • The litter crystals have a habit of scattering
  • The cleaning rake is difficult to clean

What I love about this self-cleaning litter box

Firstly, have a look at this litter box, aesthetically it above many others. Most cats will gravitate to this because it looks interesting and a similar style of a conventional litter box.

From a more practical standpoint, I appreciate that it is quiet when it is in a cleaning cycle. And to make life even easier, it is simple to use this. Because you can replace the trays easily without messing around.

If you are a fan of automating your life, this is one of those manual tasks that you will be happy to get rid off, are you with me?

It is designed to reduce the normal odor that most litter trays have. This is largely helped by the fact that the litter crystals do their job to deal with the mess. And, also, the fact that it is leak-proof helps you avoid unwanted urine spills.

In summary, this litter tray is ideal for you if you would like to get rid of the stinky task of clearing out the litter tray on a daily basis.

What I do not love about this self-cleaning litter box

Like most things, there are a couple of minor things that I do not love that I will bring to your attention. Firstly, regarding the litter crystals, they do a great job. But, they have a habit of scattering around your home. In this industry, this is commonly known as “tracking”. It’s not a deal-breaker, but its just an annoying task to clean this up, are you with me?

The last thing is regarding the cleaning rake, it tends to get a bit messy, to be honest. And, a challenge to clean it. Also, I feel, in time, it will probably collect rust. It would be good if this can be replaced. But, maybe I just didn’t try hard enough to clean it.

Pros:

  • Ideal for multiple cats
  • Simple to set up
  • Convenient (No need to manually clean every day)
  • Spacious
  • Simple to train your cat (Looks like a conventional tray)
  • Prevents litter scattering (has high walls)

Cons:

  • Quite loud
  • The cleaning time is quite long
  • Would benefit with a deeper litter tray

What I appreciate about this LitterMaid self-cleaning box

Looking at this litter tray, it may be easy to overlook one of its biggest assets, what’s that? Well, the simplicity to train your kitty to use it. But, why is this? It is because it looks similar to the conventional litter tray, so the transition is seamless, are you with me?

Because of its efficiency, and its intended design, it is ideal for households with multiple cats. It is also blessed with the ability of a simple setup. If you are like me, meaning I struggle to fit set-up anything, then you will enjoy this.

I am lazy, so just the share fact that it saves me time and is convenient is enough for me, are you with me?

It has high walls. This is quite a benefit because it prevents the litter from spilling out all over the place. It’s amazing how just little things like this can have a big impact. Also, the fact that it is so spacious keeps your kitty happy, while she is using it.

In summary, if you are looking for a litter tray designed for multiple cats, that is simple to get her to transition to, then this is the one for you.

What annoys me about this LitterMaid self-cleaning box

Similar to all of these devices, this box is not perfect, but what is, hey? Well, the first grip is the noise when it is cleaning. It is just more than I was expecting.

I think it would be less annoying if the cleaning cycle was quicker. But it isn’t, in fact, this is my next annoyance. Each cleaning cycle could be improved if it was just faster.

Finally, regarding the litter tray depth, this could be improved. More specifically, I feel that it could be deeper to make life easier.
