Do Cat Water Fountains Use a Lot Of Electricity

If you are thinking of getting a cat water fountain (click here for my best one on Amazon #Ad) then you may be wondering if they use a lot of power…

Do cat water fountains use a lot of electricity?

Cat water fountains don’t use much electricity, generally speaking. But, this does vary. For example, the Drinkwell Platinum fountain is known to use not much electricity at all. To put this into context, it uses roughly the same electricity consumption as an average 60-watt lightbulb would use in one hour, within a day.

What are cat water fountains?

Cat water fountains are indoor water supplies for cats. They are often powered by electricity and offer a constant flow of water to encourage your cat to drink more. They are used to replace the conventional water bowls that cats often used.

Most cat owners will opt for them when their cat is not drinking enough water, or maybe they eat primarily dry food and they are concerned that they are not getting enough hydration.

How much does it cost to run a cat fountain?

There have been reports of cat water fountains costing approximately $0.10 per month. But, this varies depending on what country you are in and which cat fountain you use. But, this is a rough idea so you can get a feel for the cost.

So, if you have ever wondered how much these fountains will cost you have a rough idea now.

Can you leave a cat fountain running?

It is OK to the cat water fountain running. But, it is important to keep it well maintained if you want it to last. for example, you will need to clean it and refresh the water in it. Also, a filter is recommended to keep it clean and easier to maintain.

Do Fountains need electricity?

Fountains, in general, do not have to be powered by electricity. This is because some outdoor fountains can run on solar power. However, most indoor pet fountains will rely on an electric source.

Are water fountains better for cats?

Yes. water fountains allow a constant flow of freshwater. As opposed to still, standing water. Which is known for harboring and breeding bacteria. In extreme cases, this can make your cat ill. So, water fountains are a great alternative.

How often should you change the water in a cat fountain?

You should change it every 2 to 3 weeks. This is because the water is not purified in the same way that our water system does. The filters help to improve the water quality, but it still needs to be changed.

Which Cat Water Fountain is best, PetSafe or Premiere Pets?

This is the best cat water fountain (Click here for the reviews on Amazon #Ad) when comparing PetSafe and Premiere Pets. This is because it has filtered water, two levels of bowls, simple to clean and so much more (see below for full breakdown).

What you need to know upfront

Before you buy one of these cat water fountains it’s important to understand what key features you should be looking out for. Let me explain:

  • Filtered Water.
  • Multiple levels.
  • Simple to clean.
  • Customer support.
  • Hygienic material.

Filtered Water

Having a water fountain is fine, but if it’s not filtered you are missing out. A good fountain will use filters to clean the water for your kitty and something that you should look out for.

Multiple levels

Having multiple levels mean the basin is staggered across two or more levels. Some cats will prefer different drinking heights. So, this is a great option to have.

Simple to clean & Hygienic

Keeping the fountain clean is important. So, you should look out for one that is easy to clean. This is usually coupled with a hygienic material such as ceramic or Steel (Click here for the best ones).

Customer support

It is good if you can find a manufacturer that has after-sales product support. This gives you great peace of mind in case anything goes wrong with the item

My Best Cat Water Fountains (PetSafe vs Premier Pet)

01. PetSafe Cat Water Fountain (Best Option)

  • Encourages your cat to drink more.
  • Water is filtered.
  • Two levels of bowls (more options).
  • Uses ceramic material for hygiene.
  • Simple to clean.
  • Product Customer Service Support.
  • Experience, since 1991.

  • Smaller capacity (Not ideal for large cats).
  • Needs two filters (ongoing costs).
  • Ceramic is breakable (Need to be careful).

This is what I like about this PetSafe Fountain

This cat water fountain is great for so many reasons. Firstly, like all of these fountains, it encourages your cat to drink more. And, as you should know, cats need water as a priority, like us humans, right?

Not only do they have the incentive to drink more, but the water is also filtered. Meaning more clean water for your kitty. It comes with two levels of bowls. Meaning drinking options for your cat.

As you may know, some cats are quite finicky, so if you have more than one option it will make life a lot easier for you.

Now onto the ceramic design. This material is not only more hygienic when compared to plastic, for example. But it is ultra-easy to clean and maintain, are you with me?

Finally, the manufacturer just fills me with confidence, to be honest. They have been established in this space since 1991 and offer product support for their customers. Anyone that is willing to offer after-sales support, rather than selling and running, wins a tick in the box, in my opinion.

What I am not loving about this PetSafe Cat Fountain

When it comes to the cons, I have to mention the capacity. 70 oz is ok for small to medium-sized cats, but if you have a real big thirty cat or even multiple cats, it may be best to look elsewhere.

Also, whilst filtered water is a great feature, you need to replace the filters on an ongoing basis. While this is not a big deal, it’s worth mentioning.

Also, ceramic is an excellent hygienic material. But, you need to understand that you need to be careful with it because it can break quite easily with enough of an impact.

02. PetSafe 360 Water Fountain (Great for Large or Multiple Cats)

  • Big water capacity.
  • The water stream can be customized.
  • 360-degree design, ideal for multiple cats.
  • Simple to clean.

  • Basin could be a bit wider.
  • Water evaporates quite fast.

This is what I love about this PetSafe 360 Fountain

This water fountain is ideal for big cats or if you have a number of cats in your household. Why? Firstly the water capacity. It’s huge! It has a capacity of 128 oz. That should keep most cats happy.

To support multiple cats, it also has a great 360-degree design. Meaning it encourages cats to drink from any angle, are you with me?

On top of this, it is easy to clean due to the fact that it has a lovely stainless steel finish. Which is also another hygienic alternative to ceramic.

Finally, like the last PetSafe fountain in this article, it is backed by a manufacturer that has been established since 1991 and offers product support for its customers.

What I am not keen on

Now onto the things, I am not really happy about. Yes, it has a large capacity, and that’s great, but the basin it comes with could be bigger, to be honest.

Also, you may find that the water will tend to evaporate faster, due to its size. Meaning more frequent refills are required.

03. Premier Pet Cat Water Fountain

  • It encourages more water consumption.
  • Nice and quiet.
  • Simple to clean.
  • Filtered Water.

  • The filter needs regular changing.

This is what I Appreciate about this Premier Pet Fountain

Like the other fountains in this article, it encourages your kitty to drink more. That is good news for your cat. This device is nice and quiet, so it won’t bother you while you are asleep, for example.

Also, it is a doddle to clean, so no issues in that department. It also has a water filter to improve water quality. This is great for cats.

What Could be improved with this Premiere Cat Fountain

My issue with this device is the water filters, they need regular changing. It is good to keep the water fresh, but the filters are an ongoing cost that you need to factor in, are you with me?

Related Questions

In this section, I will answer some questions related to cats and water fountains. If you have some further unanswered questions please feel free to drop a comment below:

Do cats need fresh water?

Yes, cats need fresh water. In fact, it is one of the most important elements in their life, besides food and oxygen. This is why water fountains are quite popular because it makes providing freshwater an effortless task.

When you rely on a water bowl it means that you have to be quite proactive, meaning you need to keep on top of the water changing on a daily basis.

How much water does a cat need a day?

You should be supplying approximately 4 ounces of water for every 5 pounds of body weight, according to this site. Like us humans, it is important to maintain good daily water consumption to avoid dehydration. Hence the reason water fountains are popular.

Why do cats splash their water bowl?

Cats like to splash their water bowl because it is believed that they are simulating aerated water that is typically supplied through our taps. Therefore, in the absence of a water fountain, they try and replicate this behavior.

This is why cat water fountains are typically used. Cats like the running water, it feels more natural for them rather than standing water.

Should a cat’s water be away from food?

Yes. Cats appear to prefer their water source away from their food. Some cat owners speculate that this is due to their natural inclination to hunt and find food and water. Having them in the same location will not satisfy their curiosity and temptation to find this.

Why does my cat push his water bowl around?

Cats may push their water bowls around because of their need for moving water or for entertainment. Either they just want to play, and they find pushing the bowl fun. Or, they prefer drinking moving water, such as from our taps.

If it’s the later, your cat may be emulating this water movement before she drinks the water. May seem weird to us, but perfectly logical in their mind. The best way to get away from this is to supply a water fountain (Click here for availability on Amazon #Ad).

What do cats drink?

Cats drink fresh water. But, when they are young they will consume their mother’s milk. As discussed earlier, supplying freshwater is a complete necessity.
