What you need to know about automatic cat feeders (Guide)
Before you select the best auto feeder and read my reviews, I feel that it is a good idea to get an overview of some of the best features and benefits these devices have to offer. This will help you to look out for them with your final choice.
Here are a few…
- Portable (Can move it around your home)
- Secure lid (Stops tampering)
- Simple to clean
Portable (Can move it around your home)
Portability is a big thing for me. Why? Well, I like to option of moving these devices around when required. This is typically made possible with the use of batteries, rather than relying solely on an AC adapter.
Secure lid (Stops tampering)
If you do not want your cat’s food emptied all over your floor, I mean, who would? Then a secure lid is very important. Therefore, lookout for a device that clearly demonstrates that it does this.
Simple to clean
Using the device is one thing, but if it’s tricky to clean, forget it, right? Therefore, this is self-explanatory, make sure it’s easy to clean, save yourself unnecessary work.
My best 3 automatic cat feeders (Review – Petkit vs PetSafe)
In this section, I will share with you three of my best automatic cat feeders. This includes Petkit, PetFase and another alternative from Roffie. For each model I review, I will explain exactly what I liked about each one. But, I will also explain what I did not like to show you both sides of the coin.
01. PetSafe auto feeder (Best Option)

Pros:
- Battery life is great (if using battery supply)
- Portable (move around your hose – if you use batteries)
- Locking lid (keeps other cats/pets out)
- Mealtime is scheduled (no need to rush home or early wakeup)
- Simple to clean (Steel bowl is dishwasher safe, on the top shelf)
- Controllable portion sizes
Cons:
- AC adapter required, if batteries not used (sold separately)
- Programming is a bit of a faff!
- The food bin is not clear to see-through (need to open to check level)
What I like about this PetSafe automatic cat feeder
Even though batteries are not compulsory, because you can use an AC adapter (more on this later), I have to comment on how good the battery life is.
Also, if you opt to use batteries, instead of the AC power adapter, then you will have the extra benefit of being able to cart this thing anywhere around your house, rather than being restricted to where your plug outlets are, are you with me?
If you are paranoid about your other pets tampering with the food in this device, no worries, it has a handy locking lid. This will keep them out, so you can relax.
Finally, no longer will you have to worry about waking up early or rushing home from work to feed her. You can simply program a schedule for her and let the feeder do the donkey work, yay!
The unit is simple to clean, especially the stainless steel bowl that it comes with. This, in particular, can be put into your dishwasher, on the top shelf.
Regarding the food portions, the great thing is, they can be controlled easily using this device. This can help to regulate her eating, rather than the conventional method of leaving out a heap of food and hoping she will stop when she is full, are you with me?
In summary, this feeder is ideal for cat owners that want to free themselves from having to be physically present at all cat feedings and the ability to easily clean it up when required.
What I do not like about this PetSafe automatic cat feeder
Earlier I commented on how great the battery life is, remember? Well, yes that’s great. But, if you opt to use the mains supply, maybe to reduce costs, you need to understand that you will need to purchase this adapter separately.
Whilst te programming is helpful, personally I feel it is a bit of a faff to get set up, but that may just be me being silly, not sure.
The food bin is translucent, but not 100% clear to see the food level, so you may find that you need to open it to check the level.
02. Petkit automatic cat feeder

Pros:
- App notifications to monitor your cat’s usage
- Nice size, will accommodate most cats (up to 10 feeds a day)
- The smart app to control the feeder
- Food alert (if it is running low)
- Keeps your food fresh for days (Double fresh lock system)
- Customizable portion sizes
Cons:
- The translation and grammar on the app could be better
- The app may send multiple notifications for one feed
- Would be good if it could be used with multiple cats
What I love about this PetSafe automatic cat feeder
This auto feeder is ideal for those cat owners that appreciate the integration of technology. In particular, a smart app that helps you to control your cat’s feeding. And, receive notifications on her usage (more on this later).
With the ability to accommodate up to 10 feeds in a day, I think you will agree, this should keep most cats happy, even large Maine Coons. With that being said, in the event that food is running low, no worries. Why? Well, it has a an alert that gets triggered when the food level is low.
It has a “Double Fresh Lock System” which keeps your cat’s food fresh for days. This helps if you need to be away overnight or over the weekend, for example.
Like the previous feeder, this too has a feature to customize the food portions. This is great if you are concerned about your cat overfeeding and want to slow her down (Click here for the best slow feeders for her).
In summary, if you are looking for a feeder that integrates technology well and has controllable portion sizes, then this sounds like the one for you.
What I do not love about this PetSafe automatic cat feeder
Regarding the app, it does the job, but I have to comment on the translation and grammar on it, in some places. I just feel that this could be improved.
Also, not sure if just me, but you may find that it sends more than one notification for one feeding at times. I guess this is easily fixed in the software, and hopefully, by the time you read this, it is already addressed.
Lastly, not really an issue really, but more of a nice feature to have would be the ability to have this working for multiple cats. I guess it could get complicated for the fur baby’s tough, right?
03. Roffie automatic cat feeder

Pros:
- The programmable panel is hidden away (stops your cat tampering)
- Backup power (If there is no AC power, the batteries will kick-in)
- Control your cat’s portion sizes
- Fun personal message (you can record this for her)
- Large 7L storage (keep her well-fed for quite a while)
- Reduces spillage behind the bowl (Sits tight against the main unit)
Cons:
- It can be quite loud
- Requires disposable batteries
- The buttons are quite close together (may press two, instead of one)
What I like about this automatic cat feeder
When you have an auto feeder like this, there is always a concern that your kitty may tamper with the buttons an do something weird, right? Well, with that being said, its good to see that this has a concealed panel to avoid this happening, yay!
If you do not want to use the AC power or have an issue, you can resort to the battery power, which is a great backup source. Like the others, this can also control the portion sizes, to avoid overeating, etc.
A nice feature that they have added on this device, which I appreciate, is the ability to record a nice personal message for your kitty, with each meal that gets dispensed. This is lovely for your fur baby, and will make her feel more relaxed while being feed, right?
With its large 7L size you should find that this keeps her more than happy and fed, no issues with that here. Also, with the position of the feeding bowl, being tight-up against the main unit, it avoids any unwanted spillage behind it, as others may do, are you with me?
In summary, if you are looking for a feeder that gives your kitty a warm, friendly message at each feeding. As well as controllable portion sizes, then this is the one for you.
What I do not like about this automatic cat feeder
As much as I like this, I have to say it is a bit loud. not ridiculous mind you, but, enough to notice it, if you get what I mean?
Regarding its power supply, it really needs batteries. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a built-in rechargeable battery, so you need to invest in some disposable batteries. Which, is a bit annoying.
The buttons on this device are cute, but maybe too cute. Meaning, they are quite small to be blunt. So, you may find yourself pressing two buttons by accident. Not a big issue, but it can be a bit annoying when you are configuring it.
