Is It Cruel To Lock a Cat In A Room At Night? (Night Light?)

If you are considering keeping your cat in a room at night you may be wondering how ethical this is and if other cat owners do it…

Is it cruel to lock a cat in a room at night?

It is not cruel to lock your cat in a room at night as long as you have prepared the cat and the room ahead of time. Meaning the cat should be comfortable and happy in there. So, they will need adequate activities, a litter box, and maybe some food.

Do cats need to be segregated in a room sometimes?

Is it cruel to lock a cat in a room at night?

A cat in a room with laminate flooring.

In some cases, a cat will need to be segregated in a room for example, if it is new and already have a resident cat. In this case, the cats could fight and you may need it segregated to get used to its environment first. This is a measure needed to keep the cat, or your resident cat safe.

Sometimes this is not necessary but it depends on how the cats react to each other when they first see each other. So, it needs to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Is it OK to confine a cat to one room?

It is OK to confine a cat to one room if it is given enough space and has and suitable facilities in the room. An ideal minimum size is approx 18 meters squared. But, if you have more than one cat intended for that space you will need to make it much beiiger.

For example, if you have two cats intended for that room then you will need to consider doubling that size.

Can I leave my cat outside at night?

It is no a good idea to leave your cat outside at night. The reason is they are at risk for many things. Such as other animals, rival cats, cars, etc. This is what many cat owners use a cat flap so they have access when they need to get in for sleeping or eating, etc.

The reality is there may have been some cat owners that have left their cat out at night and they have been fine. But, they could have been lucky that night, or maybe even over many nights. Unfortunately, all it takes is one night for something to go wrong.

Do cats need light in a room at night?

Cats do not need a night light, but it is a good addition for them. Cats cannot see in pure darkness, contrary to what you may have heard. However, they do have better night vision than us humans. So, a night light can help them out.

My Best 3 Night Lights for cats

What is the best night light for cats? This is my best night light (Click for the price on Amazon #Ad). This is because it has a great automatic light sensor (to turn it on), it has a nice compact size so it won’t clash with other devices, and has a lovely warm glow.

Now that you know which is my best choice, let me share two other contenders with you, to help you to decide which one works best for you and your cat.

What should you be looking for (Before you buy?)

Before you buy a night light for your beloved kitty, you need to understand some key features that will help you. In my opinion, they are mandatory, especially when looking for the ideal night light. Here is the list of features to look out for:

  • Automatic lighting
  • Compact size
  • The brightness of the light
  • Energy consumption
  • Good customer service

Automatic lighting

One of the benefits of the night light is it assists your cat in the night. But, it’s no good if you have to remember to turn it on all the time. And, it’s even worse if you think “I’ll just leave the darn thing on all the time then”. Why? Because leaving it on will waste energy and cost you more in the long term.

Therefore the automatic lighting will help to eliminate these problems by doing all the donkey work for you. It should be able to detect when there is low light and switch itself on, are you with me?

Compact Size

You may think that size doesn’t matter (lol), but it does, sorry to let you down. In the context of night lights, the size really does matter. The reason is, all of these devices I will review today are plug-in lights.

Meaning they need to share an electric outlet with other devices. Therefore, if it’s too large it could block a valuable socket. So, the compact small size is a great benefit for you.

The brightness of the light

These are night lights, so the light has the difficult task of being bright enough to assist in low light. But not so bright that it can disrupt your sleep or glare at you or your cat, are you with me.

Therefore, if you can find one with a nice warm glow, instead of glaring white light that helps.

Energy Consumption

This one goes without saying. The more energy and cost the device saves is a direct benefit for you. So be on the lookout for great energy-saving capabilities.

Good customer service

Similar to energy consumption, this one speaks for itself. If you are unhappy with the device or it has issues you need to feel that the vendor will take care of you. Some of these devices come with guarantees to help to make you feel reassured after you make that purchase.

01. Sycees LED Night Light (Best Overal)

  • Smart light sensor
  • Compact size
  • Nice warm glow
  • Ideal for most rooms/hallways

  • Unresponsive light
  • No manual switch override

What I like about the Sycees Night Light

This night light is overall a great choice. But I want to be more specific than that for you. Firstly, it has a smart sensor. This cute feature will automatically detect the light in the room. When it drops below a certain threshold, it will switch itself on, are you with me?

This is ideal for saving energy and extending the life of the device. Let’s be honest, kitty doesn’t need the darn light on 24-7, right?

Next, I need to comment on its size. This bad boy is compact. Personally, I love these dinky little compact beauties. Why? Because there is less chance of it interfering with other plugin devices, are you with me? I mean, less chance of it physically blocking another available socket.

Moving on, I have to comment on the actual light itself. It has a lovely warm glow. Personally, I hate glaring white light. Why? Because the color just feels cold, right? Instead, this little cutie has a lovely peachy glow.

Finally, I would just like to say, whether you need this device for a hallway, bathroom, or even some random utility room in your house, it will work. I mean physically and aesthetically.

What I do not like about the Sycees Night Light

As much as I love this one, I have to be honest and reveal some nuances. None of them are deal-breakers really, but never the less, I still need to let you know my thoughts.

Firstly, the sensitivity of the automatic light feature needs some tweaking in my opinion. Why? Well, in most cases you need to have a really dark room for it to switch it on, are you with me?

It could easily be improved with a slight tweak to this feature. And, while I am on this topic, it leads me neatly into my next gripe…

The fact that there is no manual switch. Meaning, if this auto sensor decides it’s not dark enough, you can’t just override it. I feel that this manual switch would have been a much better idea.

02. Uigos LED Night Light

  • Built-in light sensor
  • Customer satisfaction guarantee
  • Great energy consumption feature
  • Great weight

  • Quite fragile
  • Light is quite bright

What I like about the Uigos Night Light

Another great night light for your kitty that I feel needs your attention. Let me explain to you what I love about this.

The light sensor (& energy consumption)

Firstly, it has a light sensor. This is great because not only does it automatically detect the light and turn this on. It will also detect when it feels it is right to turn it off. Lovely (thumbs up)!

This feature leads sweetly into my next positive note, energy consumption. This simple on/off light sensor is a big contributing factor to its energy efficiency. This is ideal, considering, for the most part, it will be plugged in 24-7, right?

Customer Satisfaction Guarantee

The company behind this Uigos light has been quite generous by offering a money-back guarantee if you are not happy with the device. Either they are generous, or they are really confident that most people will not find flaws with it (I feel it’s the latter).

The weight

Finally, I have to comment on its size & weight. It feels nice and light. I love light dinky little devices like this because they just keep themself almost hidden in the background and do their job, are you with me?

What I do not like about the Uigos Night Light

Similar to my last review, I need to address some nuances I have discovered with this night light. Again, not big problems, but worth bringing to your attention.

Firstly the build of the device is quite fragile, in my opinion. Yes, it’s light, which is great. But, it feels a bit flimsy. To be honest, in most cases this will be fine because you won’t need to handle it much, but worth mentioning.

The brightness of the light

Lastly, I have to comment on the brightness of the light. In my opinion, a night light needs to be seen (obviously), but it should be quite subtle. Why? Because it shouldn’t distract you, in case you are sleeping, etc.

But, there is a fine balance. It needs to be bright enough for your kitty to see it, and use it for guidance, but not too glaring to put you off. For me, I feel this is a tiny bit too bright.

03. Vont LED Night Light

  • Illuminates automatically
  • Energy efficient
  • The packaging is Eco-Friendly
  • Compact sizing

  • The automatic light sensor is quite sensitive
  • Feels flimsy

What I like about the Vont Night Light

The Vont night light is another one of my best choices. Firstly it has the automatic lighting that I personally think is mandatory with these night lights. The vendor state that it detects ambient light and switches on when required, which helps to save energy.

While we are on the topic of energy efficiency, this leads me to their next quality. The manufacturer claims it costs less than 30 cents a year to power. If this is true, that is a massive plus.

The packaging has also been well thought through. Meaning that they claim to have eco-friendly packaging. Finally, I need to comment on its compact size. This really helps to stop it from interfering with other plug-in devices.

What I do not like about the Vont Night Light

To finish off I want to explain some of the cons I have discovered with this device. Not to be negative or moany, but to make sure you have the full picture, are you with me?

Firstly, the light sensor is a bit too sensitive, in my opinion. If you have a room that is not well lit, but not necessarily dark, it is likely to turn on. It’s a shame, but not a massive issue. It just reduces some of the potential cost & energy saving.
