What is Japenese Cat Litter?

In Japan, they have a large selection of cat litter systems. Two of the popular versions are as follows:

  • Paper Ball system
  • System Toilet

You can see some people discussing it here.

The Paper Ball system

This system is an interesting system. The litter effectively absorbs the urine and forms balls of goo. The idea is once the urine is collected in these balls it can then be cleared up. from what I have seen it has mixed results.

System Toilet (equivalent products include the Litterbox solution)

This system is pretty cool. It does not rely on the litter absorbing the urine. Instead, it has some grates at the bottom which collects the urine. This is then absorbed by these special wipes.

In the western market, there is an equivalent called the litterbox solution that I will compare in this article.

What is Clumping Cat Litter?

This clumping litter is quite popular in the western world. As a cat owner, then the chances are you have heard of it before. The litter absorbs the waste and generates manageable “clumps”. These clumps can then be disposed of easily with less mess.

What features should you be looking for before you buy?

Before you make the purchase, there are a few key features that you should look out for:

  • Easy to maintain
  • Stops tracking issues
  • Dust-free
  • Controls odor
  • Absorbed or dehydrated waste

Easy to maintain

This goes without saying, you need to make sure that your selection is easy to maintain. This will save you a lot of wasted time in the future.

Stops Tracking Issues

If you have not seen this before, believe me, you do not want to. Tracking issues is where your cat will lead a trail of stinking cat litter around your house, gross! So, look out for a solution that stops this happening.

Dust-free

It is a good idea to find a solution that is dust-free. There are some litter solutions that leave dust and mess everywhere, you need to make sure that you avoid this.

Controls odor

This is a must. The odor smells from cat liter (click here to learn how to get rid of cat smell In your house) is one of a cat owners’ biggest problems. Fortunately, you can get around this with the right litter solution.

Absorbed or dehydrated Waste

Controlling the waste by absorbing or dehydrating it makes clearing it up a lot easier. Later in this article, I will share a couple of ways this is dealt with. The key thing is, you need at least one of these techniques so you are not left cleaning up wet feces, are you with me?

In this section, I am going to compare my best Japenese style litterbox system and clumping litter solutions. I will let you know what good as well as what could be improved. Therefore, this will help you work out which one is best for your needs.

01. Purina Tidy Cats Litter Box System (Best Option)

Pros:

  • Easy to maintain (All in one)
  • Blocks ammonia (Guaranteed for 7 days)
  • Litter pads are absorbent
  • Stops Tracking issues (Anti-tracking)
  • Solid waste is dehydrated

Cons:

  • Pellets can get stuck in the holes
  • Ongoing costs (re-buying pads)

What I like about the Purina litter system

Let me explain what I like the most about this system. Firstly, as it is an all in one system it is easy to maintain and clean. I like the fact that they guarantee the fact that it blocks ammonia, this has got to be a big issue for cat owners, so its good to see it’s being addressed.

It comes with some absorbent litter pads to mop up the mess. Another thumbs up to the easier maintenance category in my opinion.

Not sure if you have ever experienced tracking issues from your cat? Well, it’s gross! It means you will have dirty paws tracking ammonia and feces around your house. Well, this bad boy has taken that into consideration as well with their anti-tracking feature.

Finally, I need to comment on the way they deal with solid waste. The effectively dehydrate the waste so that it is easier for you to clean it up. Result!

What I do not like about the Purina litter system

Like all good things, they are never perfect. And, this Purina offering is no different. With that being said, let me comment on some of my issues with this device.

Firstly, the pellets that come with it. Some of them are really small, almost like they were chippings or just not complete. But, that’s not the issue. Its what happens to them the issue manifests.

Basically, because they are quite small, they can next in the small grated crevises that typically contains the cat pee, yes, the cat pee!

So, as you can probably imagine, they end up getting stuck and mixed in with the pee, meaning you need to fish them out. Not great!… But, not a deal-breaker, in my opinion.

Lastly, its the fact that you need to keep re-buying these pads. They are great, but you just need to factor that into your budget and understand that from the off.

02. sWheat Scoop All-Natural Cat Litter

Pros:

  • Quite soft on their paws
  • Easy to detect urine (Due to white Color)
  • Controls the odor
  • Natural
  • Toilet flushable

Cons:

  • Velcro seal is not the best
  • Still, quite dusty

What I like about the sWheat Litter

I am not sure about you but I appreciate any product that is delicate on the kitties paws, and this one will not let you down. Why? Because it is designed to be delicate in this area.

It is also purposely colored white. This is a cool way to detect if there is any unforeseen urine color changes. Why would you need to be worried about this? Well, if there are big changes in this area it could indicate a health issue. This way, it’s easier to detect it early, are you with me?

The next thing its odor control. It uses cassava and corn to capture the stinky bits and get rid of the odor, are you with me? While I am on the topic of cassava and corn, let me comment on the fact that it is 100% natural.

This means that it does not rely on any chemicals to do the job. This is a great addition and one that all cat owners should be looking out for. Also, the fact that it is all-natural and sustainable, you can even flush this directly down the toilet. Making it easy to tidy up and better for the environment.

What I do not like about sWheat Litter

I have to start with the dust. I know the headline of this product is “dust-free”, blah, blah, blah. Well, I am not 100% convinced. It still seems to attract small particles of dust. Maybe it’s just me?

It has a cute velcro seal. But, to be honest, it’s not the best. I understand, in the scheme of things, this is a minor. Arguably “nit-picking”, but, I still need to mention it.

03. Garfield Cat Litter Ultimate Clump

Pros:

  • Wheat product (renewable)
  • Biodegradable
  • Naturally controls odors
  • Clumps up  fast
  • Toilet flushable

Cons:

  • Quite messy

What I like about the Garfield litter

Firstly this litter is a wheat-based product. So what? Well, it means its a renewable resource and good for the environment. It is also biodegradable, which is another big bonus.

While we are on this “natural” theme, I will also like to comment on the fact that it has been designed to control odors in a natural fashion, which is ideal for those that appreciate these clean green methods.

I like the fact that it has been designed to clump up super fast and on top of this, you can flush the mess right down the toilet. Which is a big plus.

What I do not like about Garfield litter

One thing I would say about this. It is a bit messy. The sandy substance has the habit of getting everywhere. one could argue that its better than getting standard litter everywhere, but it messy never the less.
