What you should know about rimmed cat litter pans (Guide)

Before you rush out to pick up one of these litter pans, I will explain some of the key features and benefits to look out for. This will help you to make a more informed decision on what works for you.

  • Prevents litter escaping (rimmed)
  • Simple to clean
  • Easy to store away
  • High walls
  • Easy entry

Prevents litter escaping (rimmed)

One of the benefits of a rimmed litter pan is the prevention of the liter escaping. So, make sure you have a good look at the various styles of implementing this because some are more effective than others.

Simple to clean

Keeping a litter pan clean is a big challenge for some. However, if you look out for it there are some that make this effortless, such as the ones detailed below.

Easy to store away

Some of these pans have clever shaped designs that allow them to be stored away conveniently in a corner, away from you and other parts of your home.

High walls

Having a rimmed pan is not everything. It is also a good idea to have high walls. This means that, in the event that your kitty sprays or is messy, the high walls will help to prevent it from escaping onto your surfaces.

Easy entry

Ideally, you want a litter tray that is easy for your kitty to enter. This is usually achieved by having a slightly dipped front entry side. This will allow your kitty to step in easily.

This is more important when you have those models that have exceptionally high walls.

My best 3 rimmed cat litter pans (Alternatives for Great Choice)

In this section, I will compare three of my best rimmed cat litter pan. These are, in my opinion, the best alternatives to a Great Choice litter pan. I will explain what I like and don’t like so you can see what works best for your home and usage.

01. Catit Litter Pan with Rim (Best Option)

Click here for the price on Amazon

Pros:

  • Prevents the cat litter escaping
  • Simple to clean & maintain
  • Neutral color
  • Ideal for any type of litter
  • Holds liners in place

Cons:

  • Your kitty will need to jump out of the box
  • The front side is a bit too low
  • Plastic is quite thin

What I like about this rimmed cat litter pan

One of the best things about these rimmed cat litter pan is the fact that they prevent litter escaping and this offering from Catit is no exception, it does the job.

It is easy to clean and maintain this because of its simple design. Which is always appreciated, especially if you are a tidy freak like me, are you with me?

Part of this ease of maintenance is helped with its neutral grey color. From an aesthetic point of view. it works well with most home decor, which is is a big bonus.

If you are using the litter liners, the rimmed design holds the liners neatly in place. And, as a bonus it is compatible with any type of litter, whether that be crystals, clumping litter (Click here to see why I feel these ones are best), etc.

In summary, this litter pan is ideal for most cat owners that appreciate simple, maintainable pan that is easy to clean and works with any litter type.

What I do not like about this rimmed cat litter pan

One of the downfalls of having high walls, to guard against litter escaping is the fact that your kitty will need to jump out of it to exit. Granted, this is not an issue for most cats, but if you have an older cat or one that has health issues, its something to have in mind, are you with me?

On the topic of high walls, yes they are high. But, it’s fair to say that the front part is slightly lower. But, the downfall is, it allows the litter to escape.

02. Iris Square Rimmed Cat Litter Pan

Pros:

  • Holds its shape well
  • Keeps the litter in the box well
  • Impressive design
  • The shape helps it to fit hidden in a corner
  • Nice matching scoop

Cons:

  • Quite challenging getting the sifter to let the litter through

What I love about this rimmed cat litter pan

If you are looking for a practical design that will allow your litter pan to be tucked away neatly in the corner, then this is the one for you. It is a cute design that holds its shape well.

It also comes with matching scoop, I know this is a minor thing. But, in my opinion, these little touches make a big difference.

From a practical perspective, I have to comment on its ability to hold the litter in the pan.

In summary, if you are looking for a litter pan that looks good and comfortably tucks away in the corner well, then look no further.

What I do not love about this rimmed cat litter pan

One of the annoying things about this litter is the sifter. Not sure if it’s just me, but it seems quite challenging to get the litter to sift through it correctly. Not a deal-breaker really, but I figured it would be worth mentioning.

03. Arm & Hammer Rimmed Litter Pan

Click here for the price on Amazon

Pros:

  • Nice and high walls
  • Can tuck away neatly
  • Easy entry (front has a nice dip)
  • Helps to prevent stains & odor
  • Durable (The rim & bottom is reinforced)

Cons:

  • Could be a bit bigger (a bit tight to maneuver)
  • The front dip would be better if it was higher

What I like about this rimmed cat litter pan

This cat litter pan has excellent high walls, looking at it, it looks like a hooded cat litter box (Click here to see why I rated these three), but without the cover, are you with me?

These high walls make it simple to keep the litter from getting out and making a big mess on your floor. And, although it has these high walls, it can still be tucked away neatly if you desire.

Due to the fact that it has these high walls, it has a dip on the front so that your kitty can easily enter it.

The design is clever, in particular, its ability to hold in the odor and also prevent stains from developing on it. Which reminds me, this also makes it easier to clean off.

It is also reassuring that it has been designed to be strong and durable, with the reinforced bottom and rim.

In summary, if you are looking for a litter pan with a rim that holds in the litter well, and is strong and durable, this is the one for you.

What I do not like about this rimmed cat litter pan

One of my gripes with this pan is the size, I feel it could be a bit bigger. Just a bit more to give your kitty more room to maneuver.

Also, regarding the front dip. This would be better if it was a bit higher. Just to reduce the chances of the litter being scattered when your kitty is using it, are you with me?

Related Questions:

In this section, I will answer some questions related to cats, litter and general behavior. If you have any specific questions related to these topics please contact me.

Can cats go all night without peeing?

Yes, most cats can go all night without peeing. If they really need to wake up for a pee, they have few choices, wake you up to let them out, go to their litter tray or (ideally) use their own cat flap (Click here to see why I rated this cat flap as the best) to go outside and do it.

Is it bad to sleep with cat litter in your room?

Yes, it is a bad idea to put the cat litter inside your room. Why? Well, it doesn’t smell the best, to put it lightly, and it is quite messy. If there is really no other alternative then it important to get a litter that holds in odor and clumps up well (Click here to see why I rate this clumping litter).

Should I let my cat sleep with me?

No, ideally you should have a separate cat bed for your cat (Click here to see why I feel this one is the best). This is for two reasons. It will help you sleep better, without worrying if you may roll over on her. And, your kitty is likely to get a better night’s sleep in her own bed, are you with me?

I understand that sometimes, for some households, it’s unavoidable. But ideally, they will have their own bed.
