What you should know about Drinkwell water fountains
It’s important to understand the best features and benefits, ahead of time, before you select the best fountain for you. For that reason, I will explain some of the best features/benefits now…
- Easy to clean (Ideally dishwasher friendly)
- Filters the water
- Large water capacity
- Hygienic material (e.g. ceramic/porcelain)
Easy to clean (Ideally dishwasher friendly)
It’s important that the fountain of your choice is easy to clean. Ideally, it can wipe down easily and resist dirt. But, in addition, being dishwasher friendly is a game-changer in my book and ideal.
Filters the water
One of the benefits of these devices is the ability to filter the water. Meaning, you can get freshwater that removes dirt and odor. Some of these devices offer double filtration to make this even more efficient.
Large water capacity
To save you having to keep filling this up a large water capacity is better. Some of these models offer up to 70 ounces, which should keep most cats happy.
Hygienic material (e.g. ceramic/porcelain)
Earlier I commented on resisting dirt, remember? Well, having ceramic or porcelain material really makes this possible. Material such as plastic can be a magnet for dirt and bacteria, so these materials are ideal.
In the last section, I commented on plastic being a magnet for bacteria. one of the reasons is it is prone to scratches. These micro-scratches let bacteria in. So having scratch-resistant material such as porcelain will help to eradicate this.
My best 3 cat water fountains (Drinkwell & Alternatives)
In this section, I will share with you three of my best water fountains for cats. This will compare the Drinkwell Pagoda and Avalon. But, also look at another alternative from Aurora.
For each fountain, I will explain what I like and do not like. This will help you to decide what works best for you.
01. Drinkwell Pagoda cat fountain (Best Option)
- Easy to clean in a dishwasher
- Good for older cats that may struggle to bend down
- Easy to put together
- Helps to increase the quantity of water consumed
- Large capacity (70 ounces)
- The water is filtered (Keeps it fresh, removes odor & bad taste)
- It’s quite loud (not ideal for a bedroom)
- The water pump may lose power (could be stronger)
- An on/off switch on the cable would be better
What I like about this water fountain
The water fountain is not only easy to put together, but it also helps elderly cats from having to stoop low to get their drink. This sounds like a minor thing, but it is massive if you have an older cat.
I love the fact that this can be put directly into the dishwasher. I am sure you would agree with the time this simple feature saves, right?
With these cat fountains, you get the added benefit of increasing your kitties water consumption. What do mean? Well, the simple fact that it flows like a tap entices her to lap up the water more than usual, trust me, it does.
And, the fact that it has a large capacity (70 ounces) it really helps to deal with even the largest thirst. The water itself is filtered. This is great for her because it removes any odor or bad taste and keeps the flowing water fresh.
In summary, if you are looking for a water fountain that simple to put together, keeps the water fresh and filters the water well, then this is for you.
What I do not like about this water fountain
One issue I have with this is the noise the flowing water makes. It’s not ridiculous, but you will notice it, are you with me?
I feel that the water pump could be a bit stronger and I fear that in time it could lose power, but only time will tell.
Lastly, I would really like if it had an on and off switch on the electric cord. The fact that it is a bit noisy means there are times when you may wish to turn it off, and this would help.
02. Drinkwell Avalon cat fountain
- Keeps her well hydrated
- Large water capacity (70 ounces)
- Ceramic material is easy to clean & hygienic
- Dishwasher friendly
- Water circulation prevents bacteria (removes odor & bad taste)
- Two levels to drink from
- The bottom dish doesn’t have much room
- Need to be careful not to break the ceramic material
- If the stopper plug is not connected well, it may leak
What I love about this Avalon water fountain
If you are looking for a way to keep your kitty well hydrated with a large capacity of water, this offering will pique your interest.
It has 70 ounces of water delivered in a hygienic ceramic bowl. The great thing about this material is it cleans easy. In fact, you can even throw this thing right into the dishwasher, yay!
The constant water circulation helps to prevent bacteria build-up and consequently, gets rid of odors and bad taste.
I like the fact that it has two levels for your kitty to drink from. If you have an older cat that finds it hard to stoop low, this will help her with the option of a higher level.
In summary, if you are looking for a great looking cat fountain that has two drinking levels, circulates and removes water odor, then you will appreciate this offering.
What I do not love about this Avalon water fountain
Earlier I mentioned that this fountain has two levels, remember? Well, that’s great but, I have to say the bottom level does not have a massive amount of space. And, I feel this could have been improved.
Also, remember this is ceramic, meaning it is breakable. So, you need to be careful with it. It has other great qualities such as hygiene and easy cleaning though.
Lastly, regarding the rubber stopper it comes with, just make sure this is connected just right, or there may be a chance it could leak.
03. Aurora cat fountain (Alternative)
- Nice & quiet
- Easy to clean
- Scratch-resistant (stops bacteria build-up)
- Purifies the water (Using a charcoal filter)
- Removes dirt & food particles (using foam filter)
- Hygienic Porcelain material
- Have to unplug and remove the pump to clean it
- Adjustable water flow would be better
- Need to make sure the water doesn’t run low (Could affect the pump)
What I appreciate about this Aurora water fountain
This Aurora cat fountain is just beautiful and more importantly quiet. It makes a big difference when the sound is not even noticeable and blends into the background.
It is easy to clean and scratch-resistant. You may feel that this may be a weird thing to say. But, let me explain why this is a big feature.
Micro scratches are notorious for letting in bacteria, such as plastic fountains. Therefore, with this porcelain offering, you do not need to be concerned.
This device also purifies the water well using a special charcoal filter. In fact, it has two filters, the said charcoal filter and a foam filter that gets rid of dirt and food particles.
In summary, if you are looking for a hygienic water fountain that has double water filtration then look no further.
What I do not like about this Aurora water fountain
Whilst it is easy to clean the actual material itself, you need to break it down remove the pump, etc to get to it, are you with me? This is not a major issue, but a bit of a faff to be honest.
Regarding the water flow, I feel that this could be improved by having an adjustable feature. Meaning, you should be able to have some setting to control the speed, make sense?
The last thing, it is a good idea to keep an eye on the water level, because if it runs lower it can affect the pump.
In this section, I will answer some questions related to cat water fountains, drinking, and general care. If you have any other related questions please feel free to contact me.
Why do cats like water fountains?
Most cats love cat fountains. mainly because they are enticed by the running water, which is more in line with their instincts to get water from natural running streams of water. Obviously, when it comes to bathing or swimming most domestic cats are typically afraid of the water.
Is a water fountain better than a cat bowl?
Yes, cat water fountains are better than cat bowls. This is because they offer a constant flow of fresh filtered water. Conventional cat bowls can be difficult to keep clean especially when leaving your cat alone while you are away, hence the reason why they are popular.
