What you need to know about cat playpens (Guide)

Before you make a decision on one of these playpens, or any for that matter, you need to understand what features/benefits are available. For that reason, I am going to share some with you below…

  • Removable roof
  • Spacious (Enough to fit one or more)
  • Secure (Locking zippers)
  • Simple to setup
  • Easy to store when it’s not in use.

Removable roof

Having a roof is one thing, but what happens when its sunny, or your kitty just needs to increase her visibility? Well, this is where the removable roof ads value.

Spacious (Enough to fit one or more)

Ideally, you want to have a playpen that is spacious. This will allow your kitty to feel happy and actually use the thing, are you with me?

Also, if you have more than one cat, even more reason to get a spacious one. That way they can relax in the playpen altogether and give you a break, or just make your day!

Secure (Locking zippers)

Not sure about you but security is one of the most important factors to me, right? For that reason its a bonus if you can get just a little more security than the norm. And, I am not talking about fort knocks here, I mean a simple lockable zip will be enough, are you with me?

Simple to setup

Another big factor is how easy it is to set it up. Ideally, this should be as simple as possible. Some of the best playpens claim that they can be set up in minutes, which is a good thing to look out for.

Easy to store when it’s not in use

If you are not using the playpen for any length of time it’s a good idea to store it away. If not it will use up a lot of unnecessary space. The ideal playpen will make the storage easy. It should be possible to fold it up flat and store it in a convenient spot in your house/apartment.

My best 3 cat playpens with roofs

In this section, I will share with you the details of my best 3 playpens with roofs. This will help you to decide which one is best for you. To make life easier I will explain what I like and don’t like, so you can see the good, bad and ugly.

01. EliteField cat playpen (Best Option)

Pros:

  • Removable roof (Zips-off)
  • Available in a selection of sizes
  • Easy to setup
  • Can be used inside or outside
  • Locking zippers (for extra security)
  • Portable

Cons:

  • Folding away is a bit of a challenge
  • Litter can sometimes get caught in the seams and/or zipper

What I like about this EliteField cat playpen

I like this cat playpen because not only does it have a removable roof it has a large range of sizes available. If you have multiple cats and need a bigger one, then the chances are there is a perfect size for you.

I appreciate the security measures that have been included in this as well. This is achieved with the locking zippers that it comes with on both of the doors.

If you are worried about this getting dirty, no need. You can easily wash the removable top or floor mat inside to keep on top of it.

The weight of the playpen makes it easy to travel with, especially with the addition of it being able to be broken down flat. On top of this, it is strong enough to deal with the usual rough treatment playful kitties usually give out.

What I do not like about this cat playpen

As much as I love the way that this offers a convenient way to store it away, by folding it. Actually folding it can be a bit of a challenge. Also, I find that the stability of the playpen is vastly reduced when you unzip the roof. It’s not a big issue to be fair, but it’s worth mentioning.

The final little annoyance is the little crevices around the zips and seams, they seem to be a magnet for debris such as litter or even small pieces of kibble.

02. X-zone Pet cat playpen

Pros:

  • Removable roof
  • Easy to setup
  • Simple storage
  • Portable (Folds up flat)
  • Washable internal mat

Cons:

  • Folding it up is tricky
  • Would be better if there were more size choices

What I love about this X-zone cat playpen

This playpen is another one that has a handy removable roof. It is ideal to keep the sunlight off your kitty, but then having the option to open it up when needed.

You can fold this one up and simply store it away in your house or apartment. It also makes it quite easy to take it on your travels if needed. Such as visiting some friends, family, etc.

I also love the fact that the internal floor mat can be kept clean easily. This is achieved by the fact that itis washable.

What I do not love about X-zone this cat playpen

This playpen does the trick, but the only thing I would say is its a bit tricky to fold up, in my opinion. I am sure there is a way to make this simpler. But, again, this could just be me to be fare.

Also, the size is ok for cats, but it is a bit shorter than I expected. I feel that it would be better if they had more size options available.

03. A4Pet cat playpen

Pros:

  • Roof cover (can be removed)
  • Spacious (room for multiple items, e.g. bed)
  • Floor is waterproof
  • Simple to clean
  • Easy to store or travel with (Folds up flat)

Cons:

  • Hard to see inside (material is dark)
  • Quite challenging packing it away

What I like about this cat playpen

This is a gorgeous looking playpen with a removable roof. It allows your kitty to relax with the top off, or feel secure and cozy when it is closed off.

You have the added feature of waterproof flooring. This is ideal for dealing with unexpected “accidents” in the playpen such as urine or spilled water. In general, the playpen is simple to clean, so this is not a concern.  If you are like me, you will appreciate keeping this clean and maintained.

What I do not like about this cat playpen

I do like the look of this playpen but the dark color can be annoying for practical reasons. Such as when you simply want to look inside to see how your kitty is getting on.

The reality is, with the roof zipped up, its not clear for me. So, in these instances, you will need to remove it. Obviously, this largely depends on the lighting that you have.

Lastly, packing this away is a bit difficult in my opinion. This may be because I am a novice with these things, but I feel it should be easy for anyone, right?

Related Questions:

In this section, I will answer some questions related to cats, playpens, activities, and behavior. If you have any other related questions feel free to drop a comment below.

How much exercise does a cat need?

Ideally, a cat will have at least two sessions of exercise a day. Each exercise is expected to take at least 15 minutes. Obviously this can vary from cat to cat. If your cat is more energetic, she will probably want to do a lot more. And typically outdoor cats will be more active.

How do indoor cats get exercise?

Indoor cars typically get exercise from cat trees (Click here for my best large cat trees), playpens (like the ones above) and general movement around the house. This includes playing games with their owner. The reality is, it is harder to keep them active indoors, so more effort is required fro their owners.

Do Cats like playpens & cat trees?

Yes, cats like playpens and cat trees. If you have never owned one you may wonder if cats like cat trees, playpens or any other toy for that matter, and if they are worth the investment.

I would say that the cats that benefit from these the most are indoor cats. Why? because they have fewer options for entertainment and exercise. Therefore they will appreciate it more.

Should you pack away your cat playpen every night?

No, you do not need to pack away your cat playpen every night. In fact, you may be surprised that your cat may want to play with it at weird times of the day or night.

Many cat owners wonder if cats are active late night or need night lights?, and the reality is they are so they may well use it at unexpected hours.
