So, know you know, from a high level, why this may have happened. But, how can you clean this up now? Why is steam cleaning not always great for cat urine stains? Why do some cats just seem to smell of cat pee? Keep reading for these answers, and so much more…

The Main Reasons Why Your Cat Peed Itself?

As discussed there are a few reasons why this can happen. One reason your cat might have peed on itself is that there might be a new illness or medical issue.  Medical issues and diseases of your cat’s urinary tract can cause these problems. Your cat might be peeing on itself because it truly cannot control it.

Getting Older

If your cat is older, this might also be a cause of improper urination. Sometimes when cats get older, they just can’t make it to the litter box in time. Even if they do, they might not be able to squat down as they used to, causing them to get pee on their legs.

Behavioral Issues

There might also be behavioral reasons that your cat is peeing (could an older cat do this on you? click here) on itself. Your cat could be frustrated, anxious, or stressed about something that can cause a change in urine habits.

A new pet in your home?

If there has been any recent change to their routine, a new pet has been added to your household, or a new person has been added to your household, your cat can start to have urinary issues. They might even start “marking” places that they think they own.

Litter box issues

Your cat might also have some issues with their litter box. They might not like the litter or where you have the box located. Cats are very particular animals and if they are upset, they will let you know about it.

How Can I Clean Pee Off My Cat?

Cats will usually clean themselves pretty well, but if you notice a pee smell on them that won’t go away you should give them a bath. Make sure you use a pet-friendly shampoo (Click here to see the price, on Amazon #Ad) that contains baking soda or citrus to cancel out the smell of the urine odor.

You might also want to consider a pet shampoo that contains oatmeal or aloe to avoid causing any dry skin issues with your pet. If your cat has any known skin conditions, check with your vet for a recommendation on shampoo.

Do Male Cats Smell More Than Females?

The urine from a male cat will most likely smell worse than the urine of a female cat. The reason behind this is that male cats have certain steroids in their urine. Male cats use their urine to let other male cats know they need to stay away from their territory. Male cat urine is also one way that the male cat will attract a female cat.

If your male cat is neutered, they won’t release any of these hormones in their urine. This will reduce the smell of your male cat’s urine because it won’t be as concentrated anymore.

Why Does My Cat Stink Like Pee?

Your cat’s grooming habits will usually take care of any odor they sense on themselves. If you are starting to notice a smell of pee on your cat, they might not be grooming themselves very well. This might be due to age, length of their fur, they are overweight, or a medical issue.

If you notice that your cat isn’t able to control their bladder and when they pee, this could result in your cat starting to smell like pee. If your cat does smell like pee, you should take it to the vet immediately to check for illness.

Why Should I Not Steam Clean Cat Urine Mess?

If you immediately steam clean a urine mess from your cat, the steam will essentially set the stain and odor into your floor, making it almost impossible to get the smell out. The spot will permanently remind your cat that they previously went to the bathroom there, and they will think it is okay to continue to do so.

If you want to use a steam cleaner for your floors, do not use one immediately after finding the urine spot. You will need to clean the spot with an enzymatic cleaner (Click here to see the reviews, on Amazon #Ad) and let it dry completely before you can use your steam cleaner safely. It can be frustrating to wait to clean up a pet mess, but it will be more beneficial for your floors if you do!

Why Are Enzyme Cleaners So Good For Cat Urine Stains?

Enzymatic cleaners are effective urine cleaners because they release elements that will essentially eat the urine, getting rid of the smell completely after it has dried. If you use a cleaner or deodorizer that is not protein-based, chances are it won’t be able to tackle the strong urine smell.

Cats have a much stronger sense of smell than humans, so if you don’t use an enzymatic cleaner, your cat might still be able to smell their urine in that spot and continue to go there.

How Can I Prevent My Cat From Peeing on Itself Again?

If your cat has peed on itself, you are probably wondering what you can do to prevent it from happening again. It is no fun to have to bathe a cat, so here are a couple of things you can try to prevent it from happening again.

01. Take It To The Vet

Take your cat to the vet to see if your cat has a medical problem that could cause it to pee on itself. Your cat might have a bladder infection or a UTI that needs to be treated with antibiotics.

02. Keep it Relaxed

Try to keep your cat as relaxed as possible. Don’t do anything that might set off their anxiety, like moving around your furniture, bringing in a new animal to the house, or introducing new people to them.

Why Do Some Cats Smell Like Urine?

There are a handful of reasons that your cat might smell like pee. One of those reasons might be that your cat’s fur is matted. This is especially common in long-haired cats, and it makes it difficult for your cat to clean itself properly, causing urine to become trapped.

Overweight

If your cat is overweight, they will also have a difficult time keeping their bottoms clean.

A UTI

A UTI can also cause your cat to smell like urine because the infection might cause some urine to dribble onto your cat’s skin and fur.

Pain & Illness

Pain and illness are two more reasons you might notice your cat smells like urine. If your cat is in pain, they won’t want to do much of anything, especially clean themselves. The lack of grooming can cause a urine smell.

Why Does Cat Urine Smell So Bad?

Cat urine smells really bad, but why? The urea, in cat urine, will be decomposed by the bacteria in it with time, which is where that ammonia smell comes from, as the urine becomes old. After the first stage of decomposition comes the stage that releases compounds giving the urine that skunky smell.

There are other factors besides decomposition that can cause your cat’s urine to smell. If you have an older cat and realize their urine is starting to smell different, their kidneys may have become less efficient.

Can a UTI Make Cat Urine Smell Worse?

Cat urine already has an extremely potent smell, and the odor can get even worse if there is a problem with your cat. UTIs can actually cause a cat’s urine to smell stronger and worse. You should take your cat to the vet if you think a UTI might be the problem.
